In reply to your question of: "Is there a way to "cross-train" eyes?"
I am left handed, but shoot right handed. I use my right eye when shooting right handed, and use my left eye if I shoot left handed, which I do if my right hand/arm has been strained due to my work. The primary reason I shoot right handed is because it seems to be a right hander's world. In the military you are given a right handed rifle and expected to adapt to it. My grandson is left eye dominate, but I am teaching him to shoot right handed by putting a patch over his left eye. If he is some day in the military I want him to be able to shoot with what they hand him. When my grandson becomes proficient with shooting right handed, I will teach him to shoot left handed. As for me, I just mentally tell myself which hand or shoulder the gun is in, and sight with the eye on that side, which has basically become automatic.

I'm going to but in here a bit and explain my view on what you may be doing to your Grandson.
I am left Eye Dominate and have always shot Right Handed due to the fact that when I was in school if you tried to use your left have you got whacked with a ruler, I have the scars to prove it.
If your Grandson is left Eye Dominate let him learn to shoot Left Handed, you stated that if he should enter the Military you want him to be able to handle what ever they hand him, OK most of the weapons in the Military are Semi or full auto with a 3 round burst, the weapon does not know or care which side you are on when you pull the trigger.

All I'm trying to say is Don't Handicap the Boy with your Perceptions of how it should be, He will adapt to the world presented to him. Right or Left! Pistols and Shotguns are shot with both eyes open, or at least should be. If I was starting a youngster out shooting I would start on a Shotgun, then after they are proficient with that then I would introduce them to a Rifle, Pistol last with the under standing that a Handgun is used to Fight your way to your Rifle.

No Offence intended!

KellyJ,
No offense taken, nor considered whatever. Varying view points on shooting are helpful in many ways. Currently, I use a BB gun, and occasionally a Cricket rifle with my grandson. When we first started with the BB gun shooting right handed he would lean over the stock to use his left eye. What you say about adapting is true, however, it has been my experience in the military they made me shoot right handed. I don't know if the military has changed in regard to allowing a left hander to be left handed today. In regards to starting with a shotgun, that makes sense. My grandson, though, is noise sensitive (to any loud noise) and I am trying to stay as low noise as possible to build his confidence in shooting. We use hearing protection. Any advice for helping with his noise sensitivity?
Neil

When I shoot indoors I use High 33 Db Ear Plugs and Good Quality Ear Muffs, not the electronic type but total sound reduction.

Not to again but in but have his Parents had his ears checked, I am guessing that the opposite of deafness could happen?

What I did for years shooting Right handed , left eye dominate was to close my left eye, many shooters over come this problem that way.

Post Re: Dominant Eye?
I hate to have to add more and late but,...I was born right eye dominant and right handed. At puberty I became nearsighted in my right eye while the left remained 20/20. As a result I am right eye dominant inside 20' and left eye dominant outside 20'. Due to this I can see better with the rifle on my left shoulder, but shoot better with the rifle on my right. I became ambidextrous with firearms due to this.
I think someone with cross dominance should be taught to shoot both right and left handed and let them sort out which works best. The fact is a sight is very two dimensional, everything around the sight is in 3-D so ideally a person would want to aim with the non dominant eye but see the shot with the dominant eye. (all you folks with dominance on one side are doing it wrong, HA!) But that is not always the way the body wants to work. The shooter will eventually figure out what works best.

I'm wondering do you use a scope on your rifle, or open sights, as I stated in my responce before this one. I'm left eye dominate and shoot Right handed with a rifle, closing my left eye at the moment of the shot, unless using a scope, but with a Shotgun or Handgun I shoot with both eyes open, but still right handed. Done this all my life, won't win any medals but I hit what I aim at.

That's the spirit! Hitting what you aim at, can save your life!
